The cross-border Mont-Perdu massif is registered at the UNESCO World Heritage for both cultural and landscape criteria. In France, in Hautes-Pyrénées, the Gavarnie, Troumouse and Estaubé cirques, as well as the Baroude cliff show peculiar sights of this high mountain spot. In Spain, in Aragon province, Ordesa, Añisclo and Pineta are among the deepest European canyons. These southern sloping landscapes, built along the centuries by a typical agriculture in terrace and by the sheep breeding, show the signs of the shepherds' remarkable adaptation to the harsh nature. update 28/08/2008 ................................contact |

This site over the Spanish-French border is about to be excluded from the World Heritage List. Why? |
||
| - | Its registration has been agreed in 1997 once France committed to respect three conditions, and more specially to move a summer festival occuring every year at "La Courade" by some hundred meters in direction to Gavarnie. | |
| - | This commitment has been recalled 3 times to the French state by Unesco (see decisions 2004/2005/2006) without any reaction from the French authorities | |
| - | End of 2007, Unesco has recalled a 4th time this commitment that was an imperative condition to be included into the World Heritage List. A dead line for answer has been fixed to Jan 31, 2008 | |
| - | It seems that the French state, in agreement with the local authorities (Département des Hautes-Pyrénées), has ignored the unique character of this site crossing the border, and decided to not take into account this last reminder from Unesco. | |
| - | In July 2008, the 32nd committee of the Unesco World Heritage which took place in Quebec published the following statement: "Given the management difficulties concerning the Mont-Perdu site, the French and Spanish authorities have been urged to consider enlisting it in the World Heritage sites in danger". |
|
| - | This request is unusual. Generally, such a decision is made by the UNESCO in case of substantial damage caused by natural catastrophes, war related destruction, or human intervention. A rehabilitation program can than be implemented, with the approval of the UNESCO. | |
| - | Concerning the “Mont Perdu,” both States Parties France and Spain “have been urged to consider enlisting it in the World Heritage sites in danger.” To sum up, if this will is not shortly expressed and subsequently confirmed in its application, the “Mont-Perdu” will be crossed out of the World Heritage for good. It would be the second case among the 878 sites enlisted since 1978, of which only 25 are officially considered both a natural and cultural landscape. | |
